With completion tracking, you can define various completion conditions for individual activities as well as the entire course. The condition can be, for example, opening a resource or achieving a certain score on an exam. An item can also be marked as completed by the student themselves.

1. Enabling completion tracking at the course level
With completion tracking, you as a teacher can set conditions in Moodle that automatically mark the resource or activity as completed for the student. On DigiCampus, completion tracking is enabled by default in the course settings. If completion tracking is not enabled in your course, click on the course homepage:
Settings -> Completion tracking -> Enable completion tracking -> Yes.
2. Defining completion conditions for individual activities
Once completion tracking is enabled in the course, you can set completion progress conditions for students in different resources/activities. Different completion conditions are available depending on the resource/activity.
In the settings for each resource/activity, you will find a section called Activity completion where you can define these conditions.
By default "Students can manually mark the activity as completed" option is selected.
In the "Activity completion" section, there are three options to choose from:
- Do not indicate activity completion - the activity is not tracked and will not appear in the Activity completion block.
- Students can manually mark the activity as completed - a button "Mark as completed" appears for the student to mark the item as completed by themselves.
- Show activity as complete when conditions are met- the activity is automatically marked as completed based on conditions set by the teacher. Depending on the resource/activity, these conditions can include:
- Student must view this activity complete it
- Student must receive a grade to complete this activity
- Student must receive a passing grade to complete this activity (defined in the activity's grading settings).
- Student must make s submission mark (only applies to the Assignment activity).
- Expected completion on
3. Course completion
Completion tracking can be linked to the Course Completion function. With the Course Completion function, the teacher manages the overall course completion settings. The teacher can define that the student will complete the course, for example, by finishing certain activities.
You can set course completion conditions by clicking "More-> Course Completion" under the course name on the homepage.
This opens the Edit course completion settings page. At the top is the General section, where you define whether all conditions must be met or if it is enough for at least one condition to be fulfilled. If you set multiple alternative completion conditions, select the requirement "Course is complete when ANY of the conditions are met" in the General section at the top.
Various conditions can be selected for completion:
- Activity completion: Defines which activities must be completed for the course to be marked as completed. Note that completion tracking must be enabled for each activity before the options appear on this page.
- Completion of other courses: The teacher can use the completion of another course as a prerequisite for the course. This ensures systematic progression. For example, Course A must be completed before Course B can be marked as completed.
- Date: Allows you to choose a date when the course will be marked as completed.
- Enrolment duration: Defines how long the student must remain enrolled in the course to receive the completion mark.
- Unenrollment: The student receives the completion mark only after unenrolling from the course. This is recommended to be used in conjunction with other completion conditions.
- Course grade: Defines the overall grade the student must achieve to receive the course completion mark. The grade is based on the assessments of activities completed during the course.
- Manual self completion: This condition allows the student to mark/acknowledge their own completion and track their progress. Note! If you enable this setting, also add the Activity completion block to the course.
- Manual completion by others: You can define which user roles (e.g., teachers, administrators) can manually grant the completion mark to students. A manual completion mark is then given via the course completion report (Reports -> Course completion).
4. Collected tips for setting course completion conditions
- Ensure that completion tracking is enabled in the course settings.
- Define completion conditions for individual resources/activities (student progress).
- You can set access restrictions for activities or sections to chain the order of activity completion.
- Define the completion conditions for the course. The simplest conditions could be:
- If you set only one condition (Activity completion), leave the default "Course is complete when ALL conditions are met" in the General section.
- Condition: Activity completion, select the desired activities that grant the course completion mark. If you have added access restrictions to the course that block, for example, access to the exam until other activities are completed, you can simply select the exam as the completion condition. Don't forget to save the selections at the bottom of the page.
- Add the Activity completion block to the course so that students and teachers can quickly track progress in the course.
