Access restrictions in a course

Conditions can be set for resources/activities and entire sections that determine whether they are visible or hidden from students. In the settings of each resource/activity and section, there is an option called Restrict access, where various conditions can be set.

What are access restrictions typically used for?

  • Pacing student progress: You can structure student progress in the course so that they can move forward only after completing previous activities or sections, or by using date restrictions so that a resource/activity or section becomes available from a specific date onward.
  • Limiting visibility: You can hide or otherwise prevent students from accessing certain course materials, such as teacher instructions or materials meant for other student groups.
  • Targeting content: When you want to direct different course content to different users, for example, to specific groups or based on the user's language selection.
  • Issuing course certificates: When you want students to be able to see a certificate only after completing a specific activity, such as an exam in the course.

Adding a restriction

  1. Open the settings of the resource/activity or section. Under the Restrict access heading, select Add restriction. Here, you can set various criteria that will limit the student's access to the course material.

The available restrictions are:

  • Activity completion: You can set which activities must be completed before the student can access the selected activity/section. Note: To see activities in the list, Activity completion must be enabled for them.
  • Date: Set the activity to open at a specific time or define a period during which the activity will be available.
  • Grade: Allow access to the material only after the student has achieved a certain grade. Note: This setting requires that you have enabled Activity completion for the selected activities and set a grade for them.
  • Group: Allow only specific student groups to access the material.
  • Language: The language restriction is typically used when there is one or more versions of the same content in different languages in the course. When you set a specific language as the access restriction, such as Swedish, the course material will only be shown to students who have Swedish as their selected language on the site.
  • User profile: Restrict access based on user profile information, such as department, location, cohort, or email address.
  • Restriction set: A restriction set is used when you want to create multiple different groupings or variations of access conditions.

Hiding course sections or activities

By default, students see course sections that have access restrictions as dimmed/greyed out. In some cases, the teacher may want to completely hide these sections. This can be done at the same time when setting an access restriction. In the Restrict access section, click the eye icon in front of the restriction condition. When a slash appears over the icon, the section will be hidden until the set conditions are met.
